Study: Vaping Might Cause Erectile Dysfunction
About a million men in the United States suffer from the effects of erectile dysfunction. The inability to get or maintain an erection greatly impacts sexual performance and the general quality of life for many men.
Erectile dysfunction has many potential causes, and a new study suggests vaping might be among the newest of those causes. Many men use e-cigarettes and other vaping devices to get a nicotine fix without having to smoke. Unfortunately, doing so could more than double the risk of erectile dysfunction occurring.
Medical Research Affirms the Effects of Vaping
Researchers with John Hopkins School of Medicine and New York University’s Grossman School of Medicine studied the effects of vaping on 14,000 men ranging from 20 to 65 years of age. The researchers learned that using e-cigarettes and vaping tobacco products made subjects 2.4 times more likely to suffer from erectile dysfunction than non-smokers.
The high amounts of nicotine contained in e-cigarettes and tobacco vaping products reduce blood flow, which affects erectile function. Without sufficient blood flow, the penis cannot become erect or stay erect. The resulting erectile dysfunction could be pervasive for those who routinely vape nicotine products throughout each day.
Vaping Adds to Commonly Occurring Erectile Dysfunction
A significant percentage of men around the globe experience erectile dysfunction. Dietary habits, medications, and other causes could trigger a bout of erectile dysfunction. Men over age 40 are especially vulnerable to erectile dysfunction. Those with cardiovascular disease are at greater risk than those who do not.
When vaping nicotine is added to the equation, the problem becomes nearly unsolvable. Those who have complicating effects that already make them vulnerable would do well to avoid smoking tobacco or vaping nicotine. Daily use of cigarettes or e-cigarettes makes erectile dysfunction a virtual certainty for many men.
The nicotine products could contribute to partial blockage of arteries and contribute to plaque buildup within the cardiovascular system. The body’s reduced ability to provide sufficient blood flow to the groin and penis greatly increases the potential for erectile dysfunction.
Fortunately, vaping, smoking, and your diet can be controlled. Reducing the usage of nicotine-laden products and eating a more healthful diet could reverse the causes of erectile dysfunction.
